Main => Game Discussion => U4GM PoE 3.27 Poison Animate Weapon Is Better than Holy Relic
Path of Exile 3.27 has opened the door for some seriously strong minion builds, but Poison Animate Weapon using ranged weapons has quickly emerged as one of the smoothest and most effective league starters around. A lot of players coming from Holy Relic setups are surprised by just how much better this feels in real play. Instead of relying on relic novas and awkward trigger timing, you're animating bows and crossbows into a mobile firing squad that constantly stacks poison and wipes entire screens without slowing down. The strength of the build comes from how naturally poison scaling fits Animate Weapon when you use ranged bases. Once the weapons are animated, they behave like autonomous turrets, tracking enemies and layering damage over time almost instantly. Poison doesn't care about hit size, so even low-investment weapons ramp damage fast, especially in dense maps. Compared to Holy Relic, which often feels gated behind cooldowns, positioning, and specific uniques, this setup just keeps going. Weapons despawn and refresh constantly, which means fresh poison stacks are always being applied. The setup itself is fairly straightforward. Animate Weapon is linked with supports that boost minion damage, poison effectiveness, and projectile behavior, turning each cast into a barrage. Spell Cascade helps flood the area with animated weapons, while Deadly Ailments and chaos scaling push damage far beyond what you'd expect from league-start gear. A simple trigger setup using Desecrate and a main skill like Scourge Arrow keeps everything flowing, so you're never manually resummoning or babysitting minions. Wither support or totems add another layer of damage that really shows on bosses. On the passive tree, the focus shifts away from traditional minion survivability and into poison scaling and efficient weapon cycling. Letting weapons explode or expire naturally frees up points for damage and duration, which is where the build really takes off. Starting from Witch or Guardian gives easy access to minion clusters early, and from there you branch into chaos and poison nodes that scale absurdly well for the cost. Most of the power comes from passives and cheap jewels, not rare chase items, which is a big reason this works so well at league start. Gear requirements are refreshingly light. A well-crafted rare chest with extra Animate Weapon levels does most of the heavy lifting, while the rest of your slots focus on basic defenses and quality-of-life stats like movement speed and suppression. Your actual weapons don't matter much since they're just animation fuel, so vendor bows with good base speed are more than enough early on. This is a huge contrast to Holy Relic builds that often feel locked behind specific uniques and gem quality breakpoints before they really function. In gameplay, everything feels fast and automatic. You move through maps, trigger your setup, and watch weapons fan out and melt packs in seconds. Poison proliferation handles clear, while bosses simply drown under dozens of overlapping stacks. Defensive layers come from minion taunts, evasion, and chaos-based mitigation, which ends up being surprisingly tanky even in juiced content. Where Holy Relic can struggle with minion deaths or clunky triggers in high-end fights, ranged Animate Weapon just keeps applying pressure without interruption. As you move deeper into endgame, the build only gets better. Cluster jewels, poison-focused Watcher's Eyes, and improved triggers scale damage far beyond what most players expect on a modest budget. In dense content like Delirium or high-tier mapping, poison really shines, and the build's damage ramps naturally instead of stalling. Many players report clearing faster and dying less after switching from Holy Relic, which says a lot about how well-rounded this setup is. Poison Animate Weapon of Ranged Arms feels like a genuine step forward for minion builds in 3.27. It's cheap to start, easy to scale, and incredibly satisfying to play. If you're looking for a league starter that doesn't rely on awkward mechanics or expensive uniques, this build delivers in a way that Holy Relic simply can't match anymore.
